Usually gets translated as “can”:
- 本が読める: I can read the book
However, the real translation is:
- (for me,) the book makes read possible
Therefore, the potential form of a verb translates as: verb + can + possible / verb + make + possible
Note: this differs when using を (see が vs を + Verb)
