tl;dr: a new type of 🖼 User Interface, with objects being the medium of interaction

Why? §

The 📡 Internet of things increasingly makes “dumb” objects “smart”. Although users are used to interact with these previously dumb objects directly, most smart objects only work by using a smartphone/computer as a proxy. What’s missing is an interaction technique designed specifically for smart objects, which allows interacting with them directly. When thinking into the future, this problem only becomes more apparent. For example, fully autonomous cars, which do not require a physical steering wheel and dashboard anymore, will require a new interaction technique that is designed specifically for them. Yes, a huge touchscreen could do the job, but it is a compromise - just like browsing the web on a phone with physical buttons back in the day.
