= Helper Verb, used to express desires of other people, translating as “to show signs of”

Forming

Replace -i with がる (and adjust the subject/object accordingly since it’s a transitive verb)

Example

  • 私はケーキが食べたい。
    • ”= I want to eat cake”
    • When it comes to me, cake is desired to be eaten”
    • → トムさんはケーキが食べたがる。
      • ”= he want’s to eat cake”
      • ” When it comes to Tom, cake shows signs of being desired to be eaten”
