Keigo
Keigo is the Japanese system of honorific speech. It governs how you position yourself, the listener, and the person being discussed relative to each other on a social axis.

The Core Idea
| Type | What it does | Direction | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
Sonkeigo | Elevates the other person’s actions | ⬆ Other up | 先生がいらっしゃる (sensei is here) |
I Kenjōgo I | Lowers your own actions toward someone specific | ⬇ Self down → specific person | 先生に伺う (I ask the teacher) |
II Teichōgo | Lowers your own actions generally (no specific target) | ⬇ Self down → general | 申す、参る (I say, I go) |
| 美化語 Bikago | Beautifying prefixes on nouns | ✨ Aesthetic | お水、ご飯 |
Quick Rule of Thumb
- Talking about someone above you → 尊敬語
- Talking about yourself to someone above you → 謙譲語
- Just being polite in general →

Business nuances
- お見えになる / お越しになる — softer, more formal sonkeigo for come. Common when greeting customers or guests
- 承る — used for taking orders, requests, or messages on someone’s behalf (ご注文を承ります).
- 申し伝える — relaying a message from one party to a third party (担当者に申し伝えます).
- ご覧に入れる — showing something to a superior; more humble than お見せする.
- 拝借する — borrowing from someone above you; お借りする is the regular pattern equivalent.
Sonkeigo Formation Patterns
Two regular patterns for verbs without a special sonkeigo form:
- お+stem+になる — お読みになる、お帰りになる
- Passive form used as honorific — 読まれる、帰られる (less formal than pattern 1)
Kenjōgo Formation Pattern
Compound Patterns
Honorific equivalents for the Vて + auxiliary patterns (いる, いく, くる):
