Mock Test Sources

  • 日本語能力試験 公式問題集 — get both volumes if possible
  • Try! N2「できること」リスト (p. 227) — self-assessment checklist
  • JP Drills — useful now as random cumulative review
  • Japanese bookstores (check ブックオフ for used 模擬試験 books)

Day Type Reference

What happens on each day type — quick reference

A Day (Learn)

  1. Read grammar explanations and examples in Try! N2
  2. For deeper understanding, check the same grammar in 新完全マスターN2 (project files) — especially useful for similar-looking patterns
  3. Create Anki cards (cloze deletion: sentence with grammar blanked out)
  4. Tag cards jlpt::n2::try-unit-XX

B Day (Practice)

  1. Do まとめの問題 (book exercises) if finishing a unit — attempt without looking back, then check 別冊
  2. Claude practice session: roleplay using the grammar in context, error correction, conversation
  3. Focus on natural use — can you produce sentences with this grammar? Do you understand it when you encounter it?
  4. Add tricky items to Anki from book exercises and Claude corrections

R Day (Recap)

  1. Claude N2 mock drill: specify grammar range, get JLPT-format questions, answer, get scored
  2. Grammar distinction drills for patterns that confuse you (e.g. ~にともない vs ~につれて vs ~にしたがって)
  3. Review Anki leeches from the week
  4. Track score in the Score Tracker

📖 Day (Reading)

  1. Read something in Japanese at or slightly above your level
  2. NHK News Web, Wikipedia articles, blog posts, real-world texts
  3. When you spot N2 grammar in the wild, photo it and identify the grammar point
  4. Catch-up buffer if behind on A/B days

How This Plan Works

Daily Baseline (every day, including free days)

  • Anki reviews (vocab + kanji + grammar cards)
  • 1–2 Japanese YouTube videos (10–15 min each)
  • Passive reading through immersion (signs, menus, packaging, etc.)

The A / B / Recap System

Each week has 5 structured study days, 1 reading day, and 1 free day.

A Day — Learn Study new grammar points from the textbook. Read explanations and examples. Cross-reference with 新完全マスター for deeper understanding when needed. Create Anki cards for each grammar point.

No exercises, no testing. Just absorb and card-create.

B Day — Practice Practice the grammar from the preceding A day. Focus on actually understanding and using the grammar:

  • Do the book exercises (まとめの問題) when finishing a unit
  • Claude practice: roleplay conversations, grammar exercises, error correction
  • The goal is comprehension and natural use, not test performance

No new grammar.

R Day — Recap Mixed review of everything learned that week (both A/B blocks), plus cumulative review of past weeks. This is the test-oriented day:

  • Claude N2 mock drill: JLPT-format questions (文法形式の判断, 文の組み立て, 文章の文法) covering all grammar learned so far
  • Grammar distinction drills for patterns that confuse you (e.g. ~にともない vs ~につれて vs ~にしたがって)
  • Review and reinforce Anki leeches

No new grammar. Test-style practice only.

📖 Day — Reading Dedicated reading practice with N2-level material. Also serves as a catch-up buffer if you fell behind during the week.

  • NHK News Web (regular, not Easy), Wikipedia articles in Japanese, blog posts
  • Real-world reading: contracts, instruction manuals, station announcements
  • Spot N2 grammar in the wild — snap photos and identify the grammar point
